I do like German. Not quite as much as French or Italian just because it's a harder language like English, just not nearly as atrocious. I'd rather listen to some out of tune American Idol singer than English opera (I hate American Idol).

    Agreed!
What kind of fiddle you got?
Late-19th century Stainer copy, from Saxony according to my violin expert. No great monetary value, but a nice-sounding fiddle (I know this from hearing real fiddlers play it ) and very special to me. It's been in the family for most of its life, I guess, owned before me by a bachelor great-uncle on the eccentric side of the family and passed down to me when I was a kid.

What about yours, and what kind of music do you make with it?

My tastes are kind of all over the place...Mostly I listen to Hip-hop. For you guys who said you hate it - real Hip-hop isn't on the radio generally. I hate 95% of the stuff on the radio too. You may want to check out people like: The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, 7L & Esoteric. Music by groups like these is generally musically more original, and Lyrically more clever. Members of The Roots are pretty talented musicians, and use a lot of physical instruments.

Other than that, I listen to a lot of varied stuff - Pink Floyd, Zepplin, Radiohead, Alice in Chains, Nine inch Nails, Lots of Jazz and blues. Randomly flipping the channels on the XM unit is fantastic. Only stuff I really cant stand is Country, and Masturbation rock. eg: Ywengie Malmsten, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater.

You know, I was thinking about that when I read some of the responses. My son is into hip-hop, so I've heard some artists (such as Common, Lauryn Hill, others whose names I can't recall) whose work I like.

I'd say the same of country music--what's on the radio ... you're not hearing anything like the full spectrum, and mostly you're nowhere near hearing the best.

Too wide open...I love lots of different kinds of music, but primarily metal. A list of my favorite stuff is a better indicator.

Devin Townsend Band, Slayer, Loreena McKennitt, Hans Zimmer (primarily the Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks), Green Carnation, Norah Jones, Pre-St. Anger Metallica, Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium, Death, Andromeda, Dream Theater...crap, I can't narrow it down. I own about 843 albums and 8200 individual songs.

Had to dig out this thread cause last nite I was extremely lucky
when I cought QUEEN in Montreal on TV.
I'm not much into 80s but they are really something special for me.

Last week I had lots of fun with a Jimi Hendrix DVD I accidentally ran into.
I like Johnny Cash (actually mostly for some of his points of views),
used to like Frank Zappa and a whole lot of stuff that came later
(and much much earlier, like the glorious Ludvig Van).

Just techno is not my thing at all.

Well, I guess my avatar speaks for itself In case you don't recognize it, it's the More album by Pink Floyd. My fav band without a doubt. Other than that, classic rock for the most part. I also love blues, jazz and folk. Some Swedish and Icelandic metal, too.

I'm also the only person under 30 I know that listens to classical.

    Great choice!
Somehow I'm wondering what I actually understand when I hear Pink Floyd nowadays. It seems as if I just listened to them back then and got little of their message. Its always worth it.

I have a bit of a strange tatse in music, maybe not so strange if I was a little older, but I'm not.

Anyway, my favorite band, and have been for years is Pink Floyd, I have the majority of their albums. I love some more than others, but I would say the 4 that get the most air time are The Final Cut, The Wall (which never used to be a favorite), Wish You Were Here and, of course, DSOTM (which I've seen Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Rick Wright perfrom live - a long with a bunch of other stuff)

However I've got all sorts, quite a lot of classical music, jazz and various forms of rock. Nothing really modern.

In the last couple of weeks I've been listening to a lot of Dylan and Mike oldfield. Steely Dan are probably worth a mention as well - seen them live in Vegas - was fantastic.

I gues I'm a fan of music that is really well put together.

I have a reasonable collection of Vinyl as well.

Allen - I know the feeling, I only know a few people who listen to classical! The number of times people have scrolled through my iPod with remarks like 'you have classicl music? Hopefully they will get over their prejudices and enjoy it one day.
