Sweeney Todd movie out on DVD!
I picked up the latest Sweeney Todd DVD at Walmart yesterday for $15. I don't usually like going to the theater and besides $15 is about how much it would have been had my wife and I gone to the theater to see it.
The movie was okay. I wouldn't say I am a huge fan. I just have a hard time enjoying musicals even this morbid piece. Not to mention, Tim Burton or someone should have studied the proper way to use a straight razor, or at least the proper way to strop one. I chuckled everytime I saw Johnny Depp stopping blade first (which would certianly ruin your strop) and shaving at a near 90 degree angle . I will say that I was impressed by the fact that all of the actors and actresses sang their own parts. Who would have thought that Sacha Baron Cohen AKA Ali G, could sing halfway decent ?

Thanked: 150He's a pretty talented guy and actually very intelligent, much more so than any of his acting parts have let on.
But about Sweeney Todd, I was glad to have seen it, not thrilled but not disappointed either. Good score and acting with some funny bits (eat a priest?!). Yeah, the shaving is a little jokey, but who cares about that, right?Last edited by Russel Baldridge; 04-02-2008 at 05:56 PM.

Thanked: 40The scales on the razors are nice, even if the blades themselves are props.

I've had the dvd(as a dvd screener first) since the first week the movie hit the theater. I didn't care much for the movie, but I thought Depp stropped the razor well, I didn't pay much attention to the angle. I liked the slow careful way he stropped as compared to the other barber waving his razor all over the place

I don't think the art of shaving was the point!
But those scales were pretty impressive! I just finished watching the dvd, and it was the first Johnny Depp movie I've seen. He's a pretty damn good actor! He needs to join SRP!

Thanked: 150You're right, it was the art of revenge.
But us folk can't help criticizing poor technique, even if the context is make believe.
As far as Johnny Depp movies go, they are all very similar, at least, the character that he plays is always some extravagant loner type, lots of makeup usually, and decent wit throughout.

I have a sort of love hate relationship with depp as an actor. He does a great job with his roles, but then he doesn't play the role as it fits into the piece.
And yeah, stropping on the edge as it's 90 degrees to the strop... ouch.
My favourite sweeney is still the one with angela lansbury.
Edit: I will say I was horribly opposed to Depp as Willy Wonka from he begining, knowing that Wonka is such an internal character and Depp tends to build characters from the outside in. And his oscar nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean was a total travesty to the art.
Still like him as an actor though!Last edited by Nickelking; 04-03-2008 at 08:15 AM.
