An economics professor that I had once (but didn't necessarily like) made a great point about oil. He said that we will never run out of oil, simply because it'll get more expensive (like it is now), prompting alternatives to come to the forefront. As the alternatives gain momentum, oil will come down in price and compete with the alternatives. We're seeing the alternatives and their research come along at leaps and bounds, and it's very feasible that we'll see the competition shortly.
