Thanked: 267It may be that he is not that far from what they think in general? God knows with Bush we got a government that grew 40% in 8 years and almost got a sectary as a Justice of the Supreme Court. We are screwed!

I respect McCain's judgement for staying out of the democratic circus, let Hilary and Barack beat each other up, and keep out of the dirty politics until a clear winner is chosen among the Democrats.
Right now the more they are seen infighting, the weaker the democrats get.
I agree that he needs to be ready to fight, but staying under the radar and letting these bozos beat each other down is not a bad thing right now.
(no offense intended to any Dems out there, but Your current candidates are hurting themselves as we speak)
All is fair in love and politics, once a decision is made between barack and Hillary, I think we wil see McCain step up and fight... he will be fresh, and prepared where as the democratic candidate will already be soiled by their own infighting.
Don't judge a book by it's cover, McCain knows what he's doing.

It's not so much that we ignore Ron Paul, but at times he seems to be that crazy guy standing on the corner with a sign...
I've only seen him in 1 debate, so forgive my ignorance here, but he just seemed a bit loopy to me.
I like many of his ideals, but he deals in absolutes to such a degree that if he were elected, his presidency would be absolutely scary.
It would either be an absolute success, or catastrophy.
We need somebody who can see both sides and who knows how to compromise, I don't see Ron Paul as that man.
His veto stamp would never dry out, and Congress would get upset, and set themselves against him for it.
Republicans knock McCain because he's too liberal, Dems knock him because he's too conservative... But as a President, I think he might just be the man who can unite us.
Also he seems to be the least corrupt of the candidates who I think have a chance at winning.

Is he shooting his party in the foot?
The actions of individuals speak volumes, his party may very well be running these ads with his approval, but in order for him to appear to hold the higher ground, he expresses disapproval in public, in the end the ads will not hurt him for being negative, and the message is still delivered.
It's quite brilliant if you ask me.
The negative attacks on the democrats will be discounted as the actions of individuals, not as his, he comes out smelling like a rose.
A great politician can sway armies, and move mountains without anyone knowing he did a thing.
I'm not saying this is what is happening, but if it is, it's brilliant. The few republicans who don't think McCain is strong enough will still vote Republican when their other choice is... well, not an option.
but by remaining quiet, and keeping clear of the mud slinging, McCain may sway more swing voters, and even some Dems who are tired of hearing hillary and Barack bad mouthing everybody within reach.
A percentage of voters will always vote based on party alone, a few more are "convinced" by party rhetoric, and will listen to vague promises.
The remaining voters generally vote for the lesser evil. It's not who makes the biggest promises, it's the person who can come through as a strong moral leader, the one who looks the cleanest at the end of all the mud slinging... who is most likely to win.
Anti republican/anti Bush sentiment will give the Democratic candidate an edge, but if McCain can play his cards right, many people will have turned away from the democratic candidate because of all the garbage going on.
The longer this goes, the better off republicans are.
