    Default Blackle

Did you know that searching the web with a standard search engine wastes resources? Me either.

Anyway, my BIL sent me a link to something called Blackle - a google search engine customised so that the background is black, and the lettering is white (roughly).

    www.blackle.com

From a quick skim read I think the idea is based on the premise that a computer monitor uses more energy to display predominantly white or light pages than black. So why not make the background black and the letters white?

Actually, I set up all my computers to do this anyway, but that's because I think it looks better.

Anyway, check it out if you like and see what you reckon.

    James.

    Cool. I like it.

Have any links to XP themes which do the same thing?

Have you ever tried to read on of those horrible 'cool' websites that use black or dark blue backround wna white fonts?
They become unreadable after looking at them for less than a minute.

I don't mins coding in green on black windows, but the ergonomics depend on the situation in which you are working, and on the content of what you are doing. I actually like the big fat console font in a bash terminal (vim rules ) but for fine fonts it is a recipe for a headache.

I want it so that I can bounce my 10 month old to sleep without having the intense glow from the monitor keeping him interested and alert at 3:00am.

I find the black back and bright font easier to read than the standard black on white. I'd use it all the time on my monitor, but I keep ending up on sites that don't mesh with it and I'm trying to read black lettering on a navy blue background. I'm sure I'll still use Google.ca a lot though. It's got that nice (pages from Canada) only button which shuts the rest of you up for a minute.

I hate to think of it this way, but I've probably wasted far more resources by surf- er, I mean searching the web than a computer monitor would waste by displaying the results.

I do turn my brightness down quite a bit though, it just feels better on my eyes.

    Default CleanBlack

There are around 25 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is Cleanblack - Cleaner Web Search. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to Cleanblack - Theme

Hmm, I've opened my LCD screen and I sort of don't believe this. The way I understand LCD works is that there is a high intensity backlight and a LCD matrix in front of it. The crystals in the matrix are then turned on to be either transparent (red, green, and blue) or opaque, but the backlight stays at the same intensity, so that will be the same waste of energy. no matter whether the light goes through the matrix or it doesn't.

Since my computers are on 24/7 I think the concerned parties should spring up for a OLED display for me and I'll keep it black with gray/silver fonts (my emacs settings). It will dramatically reduce the energy cunsumption and save the planet. Won't cost you even a buck each PM for my paypal address.
