Come on guys, this one is not that difficult - far less than Manitou's Shoe. It is a mystery - drama film made in the 50ies... a Film Noir masterpiece... btw there is even a remastered edition DVD made in 2005 and still available at amazon.com

... but the film is a real classic, get the National Film Preservation Board award in 2004 and a new remasterised DVD version was issued in 2005; I guess you were born at that time

PM recieved Joel and you are absolutely correct. Although you gave the official original title native to its home country. The wider English speaking audience were given its shortened title.
So there is your clue. Its a foreign film (although I would say mainstream. Not obscure in any way, dont you agree Joel?)
