    Default Did Plato meet McCain/Palin?

"Democracy leads to rule by the stupid (sophists), who while they may have fine rhetorical skills (that can exert some control over the masses) have no true knowledge itself." Plato

Hmmmm...he might have...I doubt she knows who he was. Some of his quotes are still pertinent today:

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something."

"The partisan, when he is engaged in a dispute, cares nothing about the rights of the question, but is anxious only to convince his hearers of his own assertions."

"All the gold which is under or upon the earth is not enough to give in exchange for virtue."

    Here's one they obviously ignored:

"Our object in the construction of the state is the greatest happiness of the whole, and not that of any one class."

In Socrates's mind (as quoted by Plato), one of the worst imaginable sins would be to use rhetoric to deny the truth. If for some reason, Socrates were to meet Sarah Palin, I'm sure he'd have handed the hemlock to her.
