I agree, the whole mindset is borderline-retarded. It ****es me off, too, but I think that understanding why it happens is necessarily the first step towards eliminating or minimizing it in society. Sorry if it came off callous; I am an engineer and trained to unemotionally disassemble problems in hope of understanding the nature of the thing and then being able to fix it.

Apparently, quite a number of people were beaten to death simply for having the wrong accent in the wrong place at the wrong time.

People have been like this since the dawn of men. A group of people becomes less intelligent with every individual that gets added. Inject politics or religion, and you've got a mob that is just one speech or incident away from exploding.

The IQ of a single person in a in a large group of people is often the average IQ of the group, divided by the number of people in that group.....

i am going by definition 2. that is, grouping people together by one particular trait (race, religion) and then assuming everyone in that group is interchangeable. stereotyping, in essence.

like, i view someone only as a member of a group, rather than an individual. (e.g. part of a collective)

sorry, that word does have another meaning that is totally irrelevant to this conversation, i wasn't really being clear i guess.
