The only caveat with them is that you have to be slightly careful about the remote starters since I've heard of a few cases where scanners pick up the code and then have an easier time starting & stealing your car.
FWIW, I'm sure that's half urban myth, have cautionary tale...

Remote starter? Isn't that where you crack open your window and maneuver a 12-foot crank into the hole under the radiator?

By the way, if anybody knows where I can get a good rotary-dial cell phone, let me know.

Personally, I'd use 2 throwaway mobile phones, and wire one to detonate on the silent buzzer.
I'd set it to only accept the other number, preventing radom calls to set it off.
Then i'd watch from a safe distance to verify that the target was sitting behind the wheel, and give it a ring.

very thought out bruno...planning anything? brings up a suggestion....just using a cellphone to start the car in general!...why can't they integrate the same transmitter into a cell phone...think of the possiblities! you could know the status of your car from MILES away and if you loose yoru "key" you can call it! hahaha way off topic sorry :-/

If you can't install a stereo system without trouble, I suggest you avoid the starter install. They are pretty tricky because you have to interface with several syatems on the car and you can do much damage. I had a remote starter installed in a Dodge Intrepid. What I did was shop all the car electronics dealers and found one who had a sale offering the starter for around a hundred bucks with free installation. It was around this time of year so when I found what I wanted, I took the info to my parents and cajoled them into paying for it for Xmas. I don't think the brand matters. They all do exactly the same thing. I gotta tell ya, it was a great thing. I wish I had one in my MINI but they don't work with a manual transmission.

The main point for me was being able to start the car fifteen minutes before having to leave for work on a cold winter morning, especially when there was snow. Ibefore I got dressed I could just stick my arm out the door and start my car. By the time I got ready and out to my car, the car was warm and the windshield free of snow.
