    Perhaps she was just reacting to the same thing that kept me away from the festivities -- the fact that the whole thing was a mob scene and it was enormously frustrating to try to go even short distances.

    On the other hand, my son did go and said it was one of the most memorable experiences of his life.

    I was thinking the same thing. I went to my last 4th of July on the Mall about 15 years ago and didn't get out of there until the wee hours - the Metro just can't handle the volume. Those events are a young person's place. These days, I'll enjoy a beer and watch the festivities on TV in the comfort of my home.
