History and the stimulus package.
The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened." – Norman Thomas, American socialist
MUST READ! Communist Goals (1963)
I will let you guys make heads or tails out of this!
Based on what I see today, especially in the light of the stimulus bill which, in my mind, is a trojan horse for all of the Democrat parties pet projects, Mr Thomas's quote and the stated goals of Communist Russia are coming to fruition if not already complete!
I realize that many will agree, others will disagree, and yet a few will try too shut this thread down by rude innuendos and aggressively baiting members who reply in agreement! ther are some who will do the same to those who disagree.
I ask that you all approach this thread thoughtfully and considerately, meaning say what you think and believe without berating or insulting other members, also, speak to your beliefs regarding links! do not attack the author of a link, rather refute the links assertions with your own assertions and facts!
This will make for a lively debate so please check your emotions at the door but bring along any facts and assertions you deem necessary!

By the way, Mr. Thomas said this in 1944 I believe. He had run for president 6 times as A member of the American Socialist party with no success! at this time after his last run, he became a Democrat and worked, with much success, to get his socialistic ideas recognized as a legitimate platform for the Democrat party.

Does the ol' "play nice" preface ever work with these threads? I mean...really?
It's like throwing a roast of beef into a pit of hungry Dobermans.
"Look you guys, I know you're all hungry, but the only way this is going to work is if you all act politely and take turns. One dog takes a bite, he then goes back to the start of the line, chews, and awaits his next crack at the roast. Well -- gotta go!" *Toss!*

I say relax. America isn't going to become a socialist country.
You could do with a better health care system, though. Canada's is inherently socialist in design, but who cares? It beats paying 100K for a lengthy hospital stay.

+1.
Anyone believing tha the USA is going to turn red in a mere 4 or 8 years is dreaming.
But that does not mean that there are not some ideas / p rinciples in socialism that are not worth taking over in some form or other. Making sure that people can afford healthcare one way or another is a good idea.
But that does not make the US a socialist country.
Absolutes make for ****ty politics.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I'll agree that there are no longer 45 goals remaining...
I see National Health Care as a human rights issue, not a socialist one. In a sense, every Veteran has it through the V.A. (kinda'). I think every citizen should have at least that.

Sorry Mark, I couldn't resist!
Here is what I think about this seriously:
It is just as easy to say that the religious right is turning this country into a dictatorial nation. I think that is also an over-reaction. Fear and compartmentalization (turning the universe into one of absolutes or black and white truths) are, to me, the cornerstones of allowing yourself to be controlled. Power is not absolute in this country, it changes.
On a tangential but perhaps revealing note: Personally, I think this thread and even my post are as pointless as having an argument on abortion. It only serves as a place for men to judge one another on merits that they have prescribed as valuable. I don't live in a binary world, there are many ideas and theories that bear consideration and not all are right or wrong.
