From the Snopes article:
In mid 2008 some anonymous person thought to add a "Snopes approved" line to the e-mail being circulated. In a nutshell, no, the item is not "Snopes approved" - we take issue with almost all of the e-mail's premise.
See whole article explaining it here:
Snopes Approved?
Sorry!

wouldn't the lock code be different from the unlock code?
why would sniffing the lock code give the attacker the ability to do anything except lock the car?

Thanked: 77I think you have to have one of the lowest tech remote openers for them to clone it... It would be like having an LED watch. All of them do code hopping now (it's a different code every time you use it).

Thanked: 20The simple answer is that if you could snoop enough codes, you could break the signal, there are a lot of after market jobs that have a single signal for locks and one for starts, it just switches the function every time the signal is received by the car. the hardest part is sorting out the signal from all of the other noise, but it wouldn't be impossible.
Code hoping only works when the remote and the base can communicate, and if you could intercept that, you could break the sequence. its a matter of time really, no one is going to pay for a remote lock that cannot be broken when 99% of the time no one is looking for that vulnerability. it's the same for wireless routers, there was no need to change until everyone and their grandma could hack it.
I drive a 92 sunfire, its so ugly that I'm sure a thief would be embarrassed to steal anything, I just hope they use the door handles when the take a look-see.
all locks can be broken into, the trick is to have just a little more lock than someone else.

Unless they heard my stereo thumping they wouldn't look twice at my truck lol. It's a 88 mud brown Chevy, u crank em windows, stick shift, with a dented tailgate. They might feel sorry for me an break into it to put something in it.

Thanked: 235My brother in law has a new Toyota Wish. Don't know what they are called overseas. On the drivers door it has an external locking button. You just press the button on the handle when you get out of the car. But the thing is you need to have the key thingy in your pocket for it to work. Then when you want to unlock the car all you have to do is touch the handle with the key thingy in your pocket. So because it works on touch there is no signal to be intercepted.
