It would be fantastic if tragedies like this could be minimized in the future through new breakthroughs.
He was able to detect it a MONTH ago? Amazing if there really is a correlation! But vans drove around a month ago telling people to evactuate? It's almost TOO long ahead of the quake. Of course, too far ahead is better than too late. I wonder if this research will be able to predict with more accuracy in the future? Telling people to evacuate over a month before a quake, where would they all go? For how long?

As I understand it, there is just too much to consider (as of yet) to accurately predict earthquakes like we do the weather. We can say "hey, something is going to happen soon", but that might be over a year's span. That will be cool if this scientist actually has a breakthrough. There are a few areas that stand to experience some serious destruction in the coming years.

We can predict earthquakes like we do the weather. Some idiot talking head can stand up and say whatever he wants and when he is wrong he can just say oh well thats earthquakes for you. Isn't that what weathermen do
My prayers to everyone effected, glad to hear thos I know are all right.

My aunt is in the area; she was evaced and displaced for a day; her husband's family is in an area that took more of the brunt, but everyone seems to be alright.

yeah, there may be something to his claims, but acting on his warnings seems like it would've been rather premature.
the good news is that in the long run things work out pretty well, if he's right his approach would be incorporated sooner or later in the research.
weather predictions are pretty damn accurate these days, i didn't realize some people treat the forecast almost as a coin flip, but everybody's got their choices to live by.
