Italian Earthquake
I see the epicenter was only an hour's drive from Perugia the home of Maestro Livi. I hope the disaster spared his family and friends, as well as those of our members. Good luck over there!

Thank you for bringing this up! I had checked in with everyone I know personally, and all are fine.
I hope all of our Italian members are OK and check in when they are able.

Thanked: 271We're OK in Modena and I'm sure Mastro Livi is, too. The quake was devastating but hit a relatively small area.
One very interesting part of the story is the scientist who predicted the earthquake.
He developed a system that measures emissions of radon gas and monitors the alignment of the moon and Venus with the earth.
How's that for thinking outside the box?

Thanked: 4942I wrote Mastro Livi yesterday and he and his family are all OK.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those people who have suffered and lost loved ones in this disaster.

Wow! This guy's research will probably revolutionize the research on earthquakes and yet he's branded as a "troublemaker". I hope they erect a huge statue of his buttocks and make everyone who stood in his way kiss it on their way to work!
I'm glad you and your family are ok Chimensch and I hope the rest of our members are safe as well, not to mention the rest of Italy!

I never thought of Italy as an earthquake zone.
I mean there was Atlantis at one time, but that was a volcano.
Does any one know of if there is a major fault line around the area?

from the article:
Italy's Civil Protection agency held a meeting of the Major Risks Committee, grouping scientists charged with assessing such risks, in L'Aquila on March 31 to reassure the townspeople.
...
The head of the agency, Guido Bertolaso, referred back to that meeting at Monday's joint news conference with Berlusconi.
"There is no possibility of predicting an earthquake, that is the view of the international scientific community," he said.
Gotta admit Chimensch, when I heard the news yesterday I thought of you.

This is quite interesting paragraph, too:
Enzo Boschi, the head of the National Geophysics Institute, said the real problem for Italy was a long-standing failure to take proper precautions despite a history of tragic quakes.
"We have earthquakes but then we forget and do nothing. It's not in our culture to take precautions or build in an appropriate way in areas where there could be strong earthquakes," he said.

I suppose you mean Popeii and Herculanum, not Atlantis... that was a mythical island that sunk. Pompeii and Herculanum were Roman cities that got destroyed because of a volcano, the Vesuvius. Sorry for the correction but I just couldn't let it pass...
My thoughts are with the italian victims, right now. I struck me as a shock. Glad to know that our italian members here are fine.
