Do you open doors?

Does activating the car's remote to unlock the doors count?:D

I am a rather slow walker, so when I am in the vicinity, I always open doors for just about everybody, not just SWMBO.

Additionally, there are times when I go into a strange building/room first. I like to ensure those I care about are safe, its an old habit.

I will open the door provided I can get to it fast enough, She Who Must is pretty quick sometimes. I also always let her walk ahead of me. If I am sitting in a row and would naturally be first out I will step back and alow her to leave first...

Open doors. It catches on. I even do it in Japan, where it's not at all a part of the culture. People really appreciate it.

I do open doors

HOWEVER

I take issue with the term SWMBO or anything like it

Women have screamed for equality and to state that SMBO implies dominance on her part

this is NOT equality

and I think this thread asks a much larger question than that of simply opening doors

got it in a nutshell. as a child and teenager, i always opened doors for females, said "ma'am" etc. i grew up in the deep south and that's just how well-bred young men act.

i'll never forget a few years ago, my wife and i were shopping at the galleria in dallas (for those of you that haven't been there, let's just say there's a lot of money that walks around in that mall :w). i held the door open for my wife, and there was a lady behind her, so i kept holding it open. i should have been more observant and noticed the birkenstoks and ani difranco shirt, but i was young and careless so i didn't.

she actually YELLED AT ME: "i'm strong enough to open the door for myself, you chauvanistic son of a bitch!"

so, i don't open doors anymore. i'll open them for my wife, because she's little and struggles to open them (those of you that met her at the dfw meetups will recall she's about 4'11") sometimes, and i'll pull out her chair at restaraunts no matter how many wierd looks i get, but it'll be a cold day in hell before i set myself up for a verbal beatdown like that again.

:OT i find the term SWMBO incredibly sexist and offensive. towards men. no one should be obeying anyone. both sexes should treat eachother with dignity and respect instead of barking orders.

I live right out of NYC and when I go into a place or leave a place i open the door and hold it for everyone walking through at that time. I hate how Women say that men have no manners like men did back in the day. So when a women walks through and do not say thank you. I Yell Your WELCOME!! Jockeys, I have had a couple of VERY similar experiences. I wouldn't take that kind of talk from a man and it really burned me to have a woman sling it at me. They were safe ONLY because I will not strike a woman, but they were two who really deserved it!
Now, I open doors for my Wife, my Mother and pretty much no one else. They want to go through the door, they got hands!

First, I find "SWMBO" to be a sarcastic, jokingly harmless jib among gentlemen who can playfully elbow each other in the ribs about how sometimes our respective significant others can be demanding of us. I feel in "forum speak", at least in this arena, it may have been taken a little bit out of context. My $0.02.

Second, I always loved that scene from "A Bronx Tale" where the main character explains how a man knows if the woman he is with is the right one. You let her in the car first, and if she reaches over the driver seat to unlock your door, she's the one.

Unfortunately, we can't put this to the test anymore since all the cars unlock automatically. Maybe I need to get a classic automobile to try it out on my other half.

And for the record, I voted "Always open doors for everybody", and I really appreciate the post comparing chivalry to charity. How many times have you heard the "pious" loudmouth at church talk about how much money they gave in alms this week/month/year? You can draw several comparative similarities between the two.

This is an awesome post because my car actually doesnt have auto locks...when we first started dating my now wife and I would always take my car...its a 2005 with no power anything...:(

I always unlock her door first and she would 90 percent of the time reach over...unless she had something in her hands.

Now she has a new car and we take that mostly...auto locks but I still open the door 95% of the time. Its the least I can do for her saying yes when I asked her to marry me...haha
