FWIW I think the answers in this poll are a little (
) skewed. I voted I try to but sometimes forget. Upon reading the answers that most people have given though- it looks like I should have voted for 'always'. I'm just saying that I mostly do open doors (including the car door) for my girlfriend/other people, but I do occasionally forget. Sounds like many people don't bother with certain doors but still voted for 'always' though.

Thanked: 41I was taught to always open door for your mom, your gf, your so, your wife and in fact all women. I still try to do that at 58 yrs old. As a general rule I will also hold open the door for men if it seems appropriate.

I go out of my way to open doors for all women but not for men unless I am already holding the door open or they obviously need help for one reason or another.
If I approach a door at the same time another man does I'll either stand aside and let him enter first or I'll go first and hold the door for him.

Thanked: 132Im sorry gentlemen, but "Chivalry" has left the building. I will hold or open a door as a courtesy, but rarely, if ever for ONLY a woman. Women have made their desires clear, ie. equality, so let them all live with the good and bad of that.
Im with ya all regarding the elderly, those with full hands etc...but, oddly enough i do get a majority of thanks after my good deeds. Maybe being a big guy helps the gratitude along.

McWolf, maybe you should start opening doors for ladies again. There was a time when I got some of the dirtiest looks from women for daring to treat them like a lady but I find more and more women are again appreciating the gesture! My wife hated it the first few times I opened the car door for her, so one day I decided to see what would happen if I stopped just once. She told me she missed the treatment.

I do.
Not only is it an age thing, but it also depends where in the world you are. My wife and I were in Istanbul a couple of years ago, and when she and a man arrived at the hotel door simultaneously, she was surprised when the man barged through ahead of her, giving her a glaring look.

Thanked: 171Almost never the car door, although occasionally if it works out that I'm near the door with her I will. I definitely did it alot more when we first started dating. I find it so weird with the key fob to do this though, lol. I think this is a bit old fashioned from when you had to manually unlock the car door. If this were still the case, I would do it for her every time.
I do always try to open "regular" doors for her (and any other lady for that matter, and occasionally men as appropriate). Depending on the situation, I may enter first, but ensure to hold the door courteously behind me as I pass through. I do this when we are going somewhere that I'm not sure about or haven't been to before.. I like to be the first in to see what's what. I guess in a protective sort of way

When I was married I did. As Ray said, maybe it's an age thing. OTOH, it doesn't have to be my wife. I automatically open doors for ladies always. BTW, not being married and without an option for it I did not vote in the poll.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yes almost always...and I get treated with a great deal of suspicion! Sad.
