finally when he picked up a stack of Beatles records and asked me if I would take a "qwata" for each I asked him to let me see them.
Records in hand I told him to GET THE OUT OF MY ***** YARD.

I guess sometimes I know how the shop owner feels ! LOL

why the F would I put a $40 tag on it and then take 25 cents???

EDIT I like Haitians, but have seen this at every yard sale I've had, from every Haitian who has come.
I'm suggesting that the excessive haggling might be cultural (like Asians, they expect you to dicker)

no that was just an example and the Beatles were like 50 cents each
I think he really offered $5 for a table saw I had $40 on
he also offered $20 for a shotgun I was selling for $300 (and a deal then even)
THEN he insulted the Beatles

now I see them coming and when asked to lower I state that "the price is on it" and just go back to what I was doing (probably nothing)

when I say see them coming I mean they drive a $50,000 truck with $3000 rims
so you can tell who they are

True. Over here, 'Old' is no more remarkable than 'heavy' or 'blue'.
100 years is nothing. I have shot glasses that predate WW1. Got them from my grandmother.
My parents house has a lot of stuff that is between 100 and 200 years old. Age does not make a valuable antique over here. The old countries are crammed with old stuff. There is >100 year old stuff in my parents house that I'll probably crush for kindling.

For antique to be valuable, it has to be very rare, or in mint condition. all the rest can be bought and sold on the countless antiques markets.
And bargain hunters are not disrespected. Dickering is part of the game.

Rare and mint doesn't really make it valuable either, not unless more than one person is looking.

We just don't have the market for razors here. These things are still cheap on ebay, and that's saying something!

I was talking to a clock man the other day about pocket watches.

I had seen some on ebay for a very low start bid, but might be missing parts,didn't work, etc.

This seller had bought out an old watch shop and was liquidating.

anyway, I was asking specifically about availability of parts and Mr Clock was giving me a very nice summary of which things were most common.
In other words, which would be easiest to repair with scrap parts, or find parts for.

he related to me how common certain things were
for example
in the roughly 100 years that Elgin produced watches from 1850 to 1950 they produced on the order of 50,000,000 watches!

50 MILLION !!!!

so just because it is old
it was your grandpa's
it came back from the war
it's the only one you've seen
etc
etc
etc
doesn't mean it's valuable OR rare
