Teaching a 10 year old to shoot...or at least, that's what my dad used it for.
It's a nice gun for dove and other small game--smaller like squirrels, not rabbits.

I'd say that it is most definitely for kids. I guess you could also use it for other vermin that might infest your lawn

Hi,
Like many other youngsters in days gone by, my first real gun was a Webley bolt action .410. I was 9 yrs old and 45 yrs on I can still remember going with my dad to the gunshop to buy it. It taught me how to respect firearms, great for small game, rats etc. Wish I still owned it. Instills the importance of good camouflage and accuracy, less margin for error than the larger gauge shotguns.'Living the dream, one nightmare at a time'

Like others have said, it is nice for small game, and with the right load, and IF YOU DO YOUR PART, it can serve you well. It is MUCH less forgiving than a larger bore shotgun. At least one "home defense" model is sold, though I do not believe that is an appropriate use for the round. There is also a new (though it has been done before) revolver that is chambered in .45 long colt/.410 and would be a nice VERY close range weapon with a proper .410 load.
As for the 20 gauge, I love it. Have owned a few, and loved all of them. The super-inexpensive single shot NEF Tamer-20 is simple, VERY light, and compact. It is so light, though, that a full power load has quite a sharp kick to it, less the "push" of a bigger shotgun in a heavier weapon, and more the sharp crack of a faster rifle. With a lighter load, though, or if you are used to it, I love this little gun...I think it is the BEST bang-for-buck buy out right now (though I KNOW about 99.9999% of the gun owning public will strongly disagree with me). It is a joy and a comfort to have in the woods.
The 20 gauge side-by-side coach gun is probably my favorite 20 gauge. Light and compact enough to travel, you've got two shots, enough meat to make it a joy to shoot. Very manueverable in a home defense or heavy woods situation.
A full sized wood-stocked pump in 20 is also a fantastic, versatile gun. if you are looking for home defense, I think it might be about as perfect as you get, IF you are not comfortable with a 12 gauge for whatever reason (ammo is more plentiful and more varied in the 12), or if you have smaller person who might be firing the weapon.
Let me know what exactly you are looking to use the gun for, and I can right more than you would possibly want to read, and point you to 10000000 times more. The 20 will be MUCH more versatile than the .410. With the right round and gun combo, it can do just about anything you would need it to in north america, with a few big and mean exceptions.

voting 12 here
20 is all the gun you need but the is a better diversity of ammo for the 12
at least what you find in the store anyway
I also enjoy the larger payload of the 12 in heavy loadings
quackers, honkers, and cheese
.410 gets a resounding
meh
I started with one but they aren't very impressive
if starting a kid I would get them a 20 or a 16
if I was buying only one shotgun it would be a 12 gauge

06-03-2009, 01:48 PM #10A pirate walks into a bar.
The bartender says, "Hey, Pirate! Do you know you have a steering wheel sticking out of your fly?"
The pirate answers, "Aargh! It's drivin' me nuts!"
