Thanks Shaun. I have been working with Basil since he was six months old. He finished his first season 4th in the world in his weight class. Are you an expert on dog weight pulling? Are you in the IWPA? While I think we are doing pretty well, I am always happy for any info that may help. Is there something in my original post that told you I needed help? While we are off topic, let me just run this by you and see if you approve. In the winter, along with actively competing, I run Basil in deep snow for resistance training:
Behind the barn in you see above there is a 300 foot mountain I run him up. When there is no snow, he drags his tire:

He doesn't like his tire but he seems to understand. At first he was just pulling the tire but after a while he was running up the mountain like there was nothing attached to his harness. Now he is training with 40lbs of block in the tire. I am confident Basil will do very well this year, especially with you on our side.

That really is a big friend!
I don't get tired of seeing Basil, i just wish he'd stand up to to evil Mr. Toes a bit more.

I once used a dog as a work animal, I'll spare you the details.

swimming is fantastic exercise, that is my advice
go throw the ball in the lake
    they'll do it for hours
    and it isn't work

lots of swimming will also get a slightly fat bird dog in shape for season in about 3 weeks (fat Lab anyone?)

Brad the dog as always is beautiful, and I agree with GW, swimming is a great excercise for a dog especially now that its summer.
