Actually although we don't always agree philosophically we get along a hell of a lot better than they did on the border between Missouri and Kansas in the 1850s and 60s. One of my best friends thinks that John McCain is a RHINO yet he and I are buddies and I voted for President Obama enthusiastically.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Interesting that Hedge****'s article was really a non- sequitur. Harkin's statement about the apology for slavery wasn't couched in terms of being a Democrat or Republican apology. Indeed, the apology was issued on behalf of the Senate as a whole, as there was no opposition filed by members of either political party. So why does Hedge**** see hypocrisy where none exists? And it is true both parties have, at various times, fallen down on their respective faces in terms of the unfortunate history of this country in terms of slavery, racism, and race relations in general. So what Harkin said is correct: the government's apology for slavery was long, long overdue. And the shame for how this country treated its own citizenry for far too long is part of this country's legacy.
