I think there is a fair amount of medical evidence to the effect that smoking has an adverse effect on fitness. On the basis that for front-line troops at least, physical fitness is a definite advantage, maybe not smoking would be sensible.
Perhaps for those in military admin it would be OK. There would seem to be a fair amount of drug & alcohol abuse in the military, so perhaps set against that, not smoking wouldn't make a lot of difference.'Living the dream, one nightmare at a time'

Thanked: 278They should take these anti-smoking lobbyists and use them as human shields. That would save more soldiers' lives than a smoking ban would.

I'm all for a smoking ban. No need for it. You'll see guys get the DTs from their alchohol abuse, guys that just have to light up at night when there is a sniper out, smoke breaks out the yazoo. Its crazy. But I think it'll have to get weened out with society too.
I do not think troops are allowed to smoke during basic, thats 6-9 weeks without a light. You'd think that would get the ball rolling a little . . .
but at the same time, how do you really enforce such a rule? How do you keep someone from smoking? Blood tests for nicotine?

Signs of losing freedom ? These guys sign up willing to sacrifice their lives and they want to take something from them ! What an insult. They should be giving them something. As to any dangers of smoking, the processed food we consume is more dangerous than any cigarette !

Thanked: 586When you join the military you become military property. They banned tattoos a few years ago.
What's even more ridiculous is that you can die for your country at 18 but you can't get a drink.

Thanked: 2I am no smoker.
It sucks getting in a elevator with someone who just came in from smoking outside.
My mom smokes like a chimney and it's disgusting.
That being said, I do not think they should ban smoking in the military. It just doesn't seem right. I also think it's ridiculous that smoking is banned in bars (in CT anyway).
Smokers are people too - just don't make me pay for their healthcare.

I think you will find that the taxes paid by smokers on tobacco products more than pays for their health care and is probably paying a percentage of yours as well.
All this banning of when and where you can smoke, wasn,t this tried once with alcohol in the 1920,s ? I think I read somewhere that it didn,t work to well.
