About 2,000 songs ranging from classical to rock with some 90's hip-hop mixed in. Most of what I listen to is underground type stuff. Radio is trash so I stay away from it... You have to do some research if you want to find what's good by your own standards versus what somebody else tells you to listen to.
... and since nobody else did -- don't knock the iPod because you don't have one. I've tried mp3 players from all major companies and my iPhone takes the cake...

I've changed mine up. Have it filled with old time radio shows, (Dragnet, The Six Shooter starring Jimmy Stewart; and Gunsmoke with William Conrad). Found a couple of places to download old radio shows one being the internet archives (www.archives.org) and old time radio fans (Free Old Time Radio Shows - Free OTR Downloads In MP3)

for the record (if anyone cares ) i really like my Ipod nano video (though rarely use the video function -- tiny screen) but i HATE itunes. it might be because my computers aren't all that new and it runs slow and to me is just not set up well. plus i hate the ituneshelper.exe and ipodservice.exe that run in the background yet aren't needed.
sorry that was off topic, but it bugs me.

You can end those processes via msconfig. All it does is start itunes whenever you plug your ipod into your computer.
I used to be severely anti-apple, but now I'm just severely anti-core apple user You know, the pseudo intellectuals that sit at Starbucks with their stupid torn clothes and ratty hair and feel better about themselves because they use Apple products.
That said, I thoroughly enjoy my iPod Touch. I use it more as a computer/net machine than I do for music. It does what its meant to do very well, and I haven't found a better MP3/net machine yet.
For active activities, I have a small Sandisk sansa mp3 player. It's short on user friendliness, but I picked it up for about $15. I load only music I want to listen to, and if it gets broken, no tears from me.

A few years ago I bought a Creative Zen Vision M thingie, which served me well. They outclassed the Apples on audio quality and it seems the Apples still aren't top notch. Too bad, because their devices otherwise are nice. Software stinks though, but I believe apps like MediaMonkey talk to Ipods too.
For the MP3 players, I'm quite interested in what that new Zune HD will bring. Unfortunately it needs a dock for the HD playback (would be nice if the thing just had an HDMI output), but one of the main things will, again, be audio quality. So I'll keep my eyes on some audiominded reviewsites. My Creative still works, so I shouldn't really think about changing it, especially with all kinds of expenses coming up.
Musicwise, I like to listen to a boatload of things: From old soul to brutal death metal. Classical music in general bugs me, for some reason. One of my recent picks that get a bit more playtime (changes all over the place): Revolting C0cks - Sex-O-Olympico. Funny stuff, it cracks me up when I listen to the lyrics, and the music is quite energetic. Gets me to work in no-time.
