Yes, last time I checked VW supposudly loses $7million per copy. Partially because they decided to build them in a 17th century chalet.
But that does not change the fact that it cost 10x what a Corvette does, and does not offer 10x the performance.
But where I'm drawing a blank is when something is "the best" like aforementioned $150 tailor made shirt, how can a $300 off the shelf be superior?
That's like saying a custom hand-made Maestro Livi cost $1,000, and a pimped out "feather" cost $3,000

It's all about the label. Think about it like the people that buy a few bottles of Cristal and dump half of it all over the place. It's their way of demonstrating their wealth. It's the same with the exorbitant prices of these "designer" clothes. Really, the joke is on the people that wear them since it costs the designers peanuts to manufacture.
I've had my eye on some $60 shirts that I wish I could afford. They are extremely high quality and, in a word, beautiful. The only way I would pay more than that is if the shirt is bespoke.

I own a bunch of razors and hones but I don't own a suit. So for anyone who, like me, was reading this thread and trying to figure out what 'bespoke' is ..... here is your answer.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

As someone who has spent his entire working life in the garment trade, I have to tell you that you are being mugged if you pay full price for designer duds. If you must drape yourself in designer clothes at least wait until they go on sale.
I pay $3 for a shirt to be made in Sri lanka( including fabric) on behalf of a well known designer brand. I sell it for about 9 bucks to the designer shipped to the US. It retails at about $80. On sale I've sen the same brand as little as about 12 bucks.
In Sri Lanka or Thailand I can buy the 'cabbage' Or factory over runs of a polo shirt for between a buck and a buck fifty each.
Good bespoke tailoring is worth spending on, If you need or want to wear formal clothing. This will wear well and retain it's shape and if an elegant timeless, style will last until you are too old or too fat to wear it anymore.
I still have a camel overcoat I had tailored 23 years ago and it's still beautiful. Sadly I don't have much occasion to wear it in Florida.
Good tailors are hard to find now though, like good barbers. As they retire they are not being replaced.
There's a case for buying decent quality ready to wear, but not for blowing hundreds on badly made junk with a 'sporting figure' on the left breast.

I hope that I've been of some help in the debate.Last edited by Englishgent; 10-02-2009 at 03:32 AM. Reason: Add link

Thanked: 234I'm too much of a bargain hunter to spend that much money on clothes. The only thing I wear that cost more than £100 is my watch. I have a CAT leather jacket I've had for about 5 years that cost £100 from T K Max. It's really heavy leather and I love it dearly!

I snapped this picture while in Barcelona last year. 74€ for 750ml of water, which is about $108 for 25oz. This high-class water comes from Tennessee.
