Icedog, if you didn't feel that way after reading the story I'd say there may be something wrong with you.

It's heart wrenching stories like this that makes me believe we should require licenses to people that want to have kids. Hospitals should insert a valve to block conception into boys when they are born (think of it as a modern circumcision) with the option to open the valve once they and their partner prove they are fit to conceive.

I know it sounds a bit overbearing and controlling but the child neglect, state funding for welfare recipients, poverty due to unprepared new parents, and crap like that story you linked might be reduced if we had more prevention against horrible parenting.

+1 anyone can have a child but that doesn't mean that everyone should.

I wish some people would go and take care of her before her real trial and make an example of her. She does not deserve jail, she deserves to cash her "Go straight to Hell" card. I pray some day that the people will not wait on a "a court of law" and rather get justice on their own. If it were my child or even my nephew, I would do like my Canadian friend and put her in the ground and take my chances.
There is an old saying down south that says "I'd rather be tried by twelve than carried by six." This woman doesn't deserve to be carried, she should be dumped.

It is a terrible tragedy but I will wait for more evidence before I cry for the mother's blood. If she is guilty she deserves the maximum penalty and more.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I am sure the ladies in whatever jail she goes to will feel much as we do, lets hope she goes into the general population, where I'm sure there will be a number of mothers who will be outraged and looking for retribution.

People are not significantly worse than years or decades or centuries ago, they just have better access to better resources now. In both negative and positive ways.

The story is very sad indeed but I would not go as far as suspecting every human being as a potential killer/exploiter of his offspring.

Words fail me. This female is also carrying another baby. Why? It seems that human life is being devalued. The girl had only been living with her mother for three weeks. Her daddy had primary custody of the girl, but had agreed to let her stay with her mother after she found a place to live and held a job for six months. What kind of parent raises their child for years and then gives them up because the other parent FINALLY has a job and a place to live??? This "family" was living in a mobile home from what I've read. There was the mother, Shaniya, a brother, the mothers sister and her baby and the boyfriend all living there. I wonder what part of that picture made the father feel he should give her a second chance at raising Shaniya...a second chance? What is up with that, we are talking about a child here for gods sake not a gold fish.

I don't know the mother's previous background as far as run-ins with the law, but I think it's fairly reasonable to say, "Hey, your mom looks like she finally getting herself together -- why don't you visit with her for a while?"

You can't expect anything like this to happen. The father is going to live the rest of his life feeling guilty (unjustly, IMO) about his daughter's death. I can't even begin to imagine what that must be like. This couple deserves a special type of punishment.

I will never understand such people. If she didn't want the girl, why not just send her back to her father? I hurl at her the ancient curse, "May she live forever".
