Thanked: 586Haitian Tragedy
I've never been involved in a natural disater. I can't imagine what it must be like to have your entire world destroyed. I had a girlfriend for a few years who was born on Martinique to a French father and a Haitian mother. She was living in New Haven when we were together. She was attending Yale at the time. Our relationship ended when she moved to Haiti to work on some heavy duty charity projects. She was actually helping to build an orphanage and medical center. I got a call from her brother today. She was one of the most beautiful women I ever met. Her name was Junice.
Even though I am trying to sell everything I own just to pay my bills and get new eyeglasses, I am going to send a few dollars to help those who are still alive. Junice would have liked that.

It is a horrendous event. I have been inconvenienced by hurricanes that left me without power for a couple of weeks on two occasions but that pales by comparison. My heart goes out to those people and I am glad that our current administration is jumping in with both feet to help. I'm not generally a praying man but I'm saying some for those folks.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

My company provides emergency satellite VoIP to the palace... the signal to the modem abruptly ended and there are images of the palace in ruins. However, they have several other backup satellite VoIP modems and antennas that are fully active. We have yet to get through to anyone as the lines are tied up with heavy VoIP traffic.
Luckily, none of the antennas were thrown off peak with the satellite so they have emergency VoIP, except for the palace.

I think it is impossible for those who have not ever personally experienced or witnessed any catastrophe, to realize the total chaos, sorrow and horror there must be.

American Red Cross Haitian Earthquake Disaster Relief Webpage
Dear Fellow SRP Members,
The following link to the American Red Cross is available for all individuals who would like to make a donation to the American Red Cross's disaster relief efforts in Haiti.
https://american.redcross.org/site/D...ar52b2.app195a
The following statement is taken from the American Red Cross website. They report that, "Due to the overwhelming generosity of our supporters, we are experiencing a lag time in donation processing. Transactions may take up to 12 hours to process."
HAITI RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT
On January 12, a series of earthquakes measuring 6.5 to 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated Haiti. The American Red Cross is working with its partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network, including the Haitian Red Cross, and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.
Your gift to the American Red Cross will support emergency relief and recovery efforts to help those people affected by the earthquake in Haiti. Assistance provided by the American Red Cross may include sending relief supplies, mobilizing relief workers and providing financial resources and recovery.Last edited by jhenry; 01-15-2010 at 10:46 AM.

Sorry to hear that Ice dog. Kid of makes one's problems pale into insignificance. I'm not into making donations as a rule but think I'll follow your lead on this one.

Sorry for your loss. My wake up call came on a mission trip to Guatemala when I truly saw the difference not only in culture but in standard of living. Some of the areas we went to were so poor but proud you couldn't help but have it tear out your heart. To know first hand just far below the poverty line these people live just makes it difficult to sit idle. Do what you can even if it's only a buck it still helps make a difference especially when everyone gets involved.

Thanked: 586Thank you all for your kind words. Today there was a special reminder report about the plane that landed in the Hudson River a year ago. That means it is only a few days until the first anniversary of the Buffulo crash in which I lost a very good friend. These are sad times. I need to think of happier things.
