I'm with old school, except you could turn it all together if you were doing it outboard, but I think it would be easiest to turn the bowl down, cut it and put another piece in and smooth it to final shape.

Thanked: 586Old School is close enough!
I started with a 4"x4"x3" cocobolo blank. I cut a 3/8" dado on the tablesaw from the center of the blank out to a corner. I filled the dado with a slab of balsa and turned the bowl. Then I removed the balsa, replaced it with an appropriately carved bit of mountain laurel and hand finished. I used mountain laurel because it is very twisty and I was able to find a piece that was the basic size and shape as I pictured the finished tendril. The grain runs the full length of the tendril which makes it extremely strong.
Thanks for playing!
