I am far beyond the point in my night where I could devote any reasonable thought to trying to figure that out... but it is quite cool!
I will try again tomorrow when I have something to bring to the table.
On a side note, please keep posting cool lathe projects, I just got a lathe for christmas and I love your how-to's

That is really beautiful piece of work. You got me curious. In fact i had to get to my garage to scratch my head with my lathe. I think i have a clue, hell no i don't

I know exactly how it happened, but it depends on your personal belief:
(2) god created it in this most unique and precious way (and he designed it rather intelligently too)
(1) it evolved through natural selection as Darwin told it to do
Either way, way cool, praise be to the creator/creation process!

MY guess is that when the handle part was turned,it formed part of the top rim of the bowl.Then it was steam bent up into the area it is in now,then spoke shaved to have the rounded appearance.
