Even though it sounds like you've already made up your mind that this is fear mongering, there have been two 100 year floods in Iowa in the past decade and hurricaine Katrina, among other hurricaines are what I (and some of the top climatologists in the world) believe are the result of human activity's effect on global climate.
Minute changes in the upper atmosphere have a compounded effect on what we experience in weather.
Its not going to cause earthquakes, but in terms of moisture distribution and force winds it has a huge global effect.
