    It is very far fetched, indeed, by Newton's law the temperature change is exponential.

    I think students need to learn to deal with singularities, instead of taking the parabolic deus machina. After all in the complex world non-analytic rules!

    However, as soon as the heating starts up again, the temperature graph would be come asymmetrical and then it would look nothing like the 2nd order function anymore.
    What do physics and math have to do with each other?....... Check my sig......LOL

    Nah man, in the complex world stochastic rules!!

    If James were a real mathematician, he'd occupy himself with 'real' math like higher order partial differential equations instead of this 'counting the beans' statistics hoo-ha.

    But if James were a real mathematician, he wouldn't be able to afford all those nice Sheffield razors he has

    I take offence!! I'm a real mathematician, I really am! Why, only just the other day I came up with something completely esoteric and useless. Yes, it is true that when I talk to people I make eye contact, and yes, I can play sports and interact naturally with women. But apart from that, I am a mathematician, honest I am!

    I have a terrible maths teacher who really dosent have the time of day for her students, if you don`t get it first time round you don`t get it.
    I`ve lernt more from youtube and google than i have from her.

    but i have a couple of questions i`m struggleing with, and was wondering if any one would be willing to help me with them?

    first question is....the temperature in a room is kept constant at a maximum value (Tmax)whe the heating system is switched off for maintenance the temperature falls untill the work is completed and the system is switched on again.
    The temperature then increases untill it once again reaches Tmax. the temperature at ant time (t hours) during the maintenance period is given by:

    Tmax = t²-9t+61/4

    a) what is the value of t max.

    b Use the method of completing the square to determine:

    i)the minimum temperature reached during the maintenance period.

    ii)the amount of time the system was switched off for maintenance.
    Oh bother something is missing these are inconsistant.
    Tmax = a constant.
    t²-9t+61/4 = a variable function of time.

    The problem as stated is tangled or missing something.
