It gets easier.
The best motivator when you are doing those squadded runs is when there is someone suffering worse than you are. It's not great to take pleasure in another's suffering but at times like that it can spur you on. Things could always be worse.
+1 on the socks. Twin skin / 1000 mile type socks are the way to go although recently Ive started running in these:
They look pretty bonkers but the don't half give you're legs and feet a workout.
P.S. Ipods are great ,but when without, a little singing inside your own head helps and no one can tell (unless you can't help moving your lips )Last edited by TartanJim; 03-08-2010 at 01:34 AM.

TartanJim,
Those are awesome looking shoes. Vibram FiveFingers. How do those feel? Looks like a nice workout shoe and walk around town.

Logistics,
Thanks. They do take some getting used to as there is no cushioning whatsoever but before them I was running in Nike Free 5.0 shoes which were a kind of half-way-house. They helped adjust my running style to be more fore/mid foot strike oriented.
They feel really good when out in them, although at the moment I'm still in the process of getting completely used to them. After around 5 or 6 miles on concrete its nice to get on the grass for a break. Your calves really get put through their paces as your natural shock absorbers but I'm feeling the benefits of it, so its all good.
I highly recommend them, even if they are not your regular shoe of choice, they will strengthen your feet and legs when used. They are relativley expensive but I think they are cheaper in the US than here in the UK.

A Motivator
Quick Orange,
I forgot to suggest the Nike+ sport band and sensor in conjunction with the Nike+ website as a motivational tool. It lets you take part in all sorts of running based challenges with people you know or with people you don't, and from all over the world.
I wasn't too convinced at first but it does bring out your competitive side if your mates are beating/catching you. I am currently in challenges with people here at work (England) and others with my mates back home in Scotland.
Just a thought.

Thanked: 4942Man, I used to love to run. I did 3 miles a day for around 25 years and did mini-tri's and halfs and it was always just a great daily release. Unfortunately, I started to get some pain about 5 years ago and it was down hill from there. One hip down and one to go. The technology and lessening of the shock are good tings........

I always find thinking of a song that matches the rhythm of your feet hitting the ground helps. So as you speed up and slow down you're constantly having to think of a song that matches the tempo of your pace. It keeps your brain going, and you have the music in your mind as well!
I used to find running really boring when I did it without music, so thats why I came up with this idea. Now I always take my iPod and its quite fun, I just get into this zone and its almost like meditation. Its especially enjoyable in spring and summer when I can go running along the river or round Battersea Park.
