    Default World Cup 2010

Thoughts, predictions, comments, favorite World Cup-watching food and drink?

Before starting, we all know what the sport is called in respective countries so please no soccer/football/whatever debates.

I love watching soccer and WC is so much fun. I always pull for the US in international matches, but otherwise I'm quite fickle in my support of countries during international matches. I'm several generations removed from Italy so they're my #2. I loved visiting Barcelona so Spain is up there. I have friends who moved here from England (Bath), and also some that recently moved to Germany (Kaiserslautern) so those are two countries that I'll also root for. It'll be an interesting US/EN party at the Brits' home this Saturday!

I hope Altidore heals quickly for the US and boy does it suck to see Drogba go out so close to the start.

So tell us what you think about the Cup and let's get some gentlemanly debate once those matches start!

I've been watching the FIFA world cup since the days of Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Neeskens, Rossi, Dino Zoff, Maradona, Muller, Platini, Moore, Bobby Charlton,.. I even saw Pelé play the last 30 minutes of his career.

Nothing will ever compare to players and soccer from the old days. Several new rules have changed since then. But I'll still watch it until I die. One of the best games ever. FiFa 1974 Germany 2 - 1 Netherlands.

It's so hard to predict anything as imo the underdog can sometimes do more damage than expected. As always the Germans, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France,... being the top contenders.

    I'll be watching for sure.

Yeah, That was a great game. I still remember watching it on the tube as a young boy.

My family is Greek so I'm cheering for them. But I have always been a fan of the Germans and spain.

I know Greece is a long shot but both German and Spain have a good chance I think.

And what do you mean favorite food?
Lol I'm too bussy jumping shouting and being too nervous to eat anything. But then again there is always beer to be had, but that get spilled sometimes from the jumping.

Soccer is in my blood I'm just way to excited about it!

    ....snip....
For gatherings with beer a favorite is "cheese barf".
Melted Velveta cheese with canned beef chili.
Very American, if the goal is to inflict that on
the group. Keep it hot in a crock pot. Serve
    with corn chips...

As an England fan, I am of course destined for heartbreak and disappointment. Every 4 years it's the same trite line "we have the best team in years and we are serious contenders, blah blah blah".

Of course, misery is a big part of club football in Britain, so we'll be in our element!

So come on you SRPers... let's have predictions for the opening England vs USA game.

    Here's mine:
    We're gonna pummel you 3-1.

(In the entirely likely event that England lose, I'll have to lurk here for the next month.)

England will of course go through, but not an easy walk as you cross the pond folk think. Wayne will do his part for his country as always, but the US get out on Saturday with 2-1 win to the yanks. How? The injury/drama prone back line.

    Clint Dempsey FTW!

    Aah, some fine memories there!!
I remember that match myself, a classic for sure.
My own favourite is the thrilling match between Italy and Brazil in 82.

My picks for which teams to look out for would be Argentina, Spain, Brazil and England.
Most of all I would want football to finally 'come home'.

Also, look out for Portugal, and one of the stronger african teams.

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Well, this happened two days ago in a warm up match between Spain and Poland.

Frankly, it's so ridiculously good that I figure the rest of us might as well pack up and go home. Spain were eventual 6-0 winners. (Sigh.)
