World Cup 2010
Thoughts, predictions, comments, favorite World Cup-watching food and drink?
Before starting, we all know what the sport is called in respective countries so please no soccer/football/whatever debates.
I love watching soccer and WC is so much fun. I always pull for the US in international matches, but otherwise I'm quite fickle in my support of countries during international matches. I'm several generations removed from Italy so they're my #2. I loved visiting Barcelona so Spain is up there. I have friends who moved here from England (Bath), and also some that recently moved to Germany (Kaiserslautern) so those are two countries that I'll also root for. It'll be an interesting US/EN party at the Brits' home this Saturday!
I hope Altidore heals quickly for the US and boy does it suck to see Drogba go out so close to the start.
So tell us what you think about the Cup and let's get some gentlemanly debate once those matches start!

I've been watching the FIFA world cup since the days of Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Neeskens, Rossi, Dino Zoff, Maradona, Muller, Platini, Moore, Bobby Charlton,.. I even saw Pelé play the last 30 minutes of his career.
Nothing will ever compare to players and soccer from the old days. Several new rules have changed since then. But I'll still watch it until I die. One of the best games ever. FiFa 1974 Germany 2 - 1 Netherlands.
It's so hard to predict anything as imo the underdog can sometimes do more damage than expected. As always the Germans, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France,... being the top contenders.
I'll be watching for sure.

My family is Greek so I'm cheering for them. But I have always been a fan of the Germans and spain.
I know Greece is a long shot but both German and Spain have a good chance I think.
And what do you mean favorite food?
Lol I'm too bussy jumping shouting and being too nervous to eat anything. But then again there is always beer to be had, but that get spilled sometimes from the jumping.
Soccer is in my blood I'm just way to excited about it!

Aah, some fine memories there!!
I remember that match myself, a classic for sure.
My own favourite is the thrilling match between Italy and Brazil in 82.
My picks for which teams to look out for would be Argentina, Spain, Brazil and England.
Most of all I would want football to finally 'come home'.
Also, look out for Portugal, and one of the stronger african teams.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Well, this happened two days ago in a warm up match between Spain and Poland.
Frankly, it's so ridiculously good that I figure the rest of us might as well pack up and go home. Spain were eventual 6-0 winners. (Sigh.)

I don't like the world cup. I'm not a big soccer/football fan. But the reason I don't like the world cup is because it turns half of my students into zombies. In their misguided sence of what is important and what is not important they think watching soccer/football is more important than getting an education.

Portugal does seem like a good pretender for the top 10 teams. In my opinion we will not win the world cup. Not by a long mile... If Portugal plays the 1/2 final I will be very happy indeed. The Coach is not what he's cracked-up to be and the team is not the best we've seen in the previous years.
If only we could have the Euro 2004 team back (except the goalie... he sucked! :P) and if that team was coached by Mourinho... If only... then Portugal could frighten some of the best out there.
Of course, for me, there is only one team to cheer for: Portugal! But I do it by default... I don't even like football.![]()

Almost time!
A colleague sent me this link. Marca.com is Spanish sports paper dealing with Real Madrid and they have a slick Flash wheel that lets you view matches by country, group, match site, or match day:

In the opening match I'm pulling for S. Africa over Mexico.
