Laphroaig, eh? i found in my dad's liquor cabinet near the back a bottle of 16 year old Single Malt Cask Strength Laphroaig. its only about 10 years since the bottle was opened. it was so good with a splash of cold water and a good book. i left that one at home when i went to college, im currently working through a bottle of The Famous Grouse, which is a good mixed scotch whisky. It doesnt have the subtlety of a single malt but it suites me fine and the price is right.

    Paul,
If you still have a portion of that 16 yr cask strength Laphroaig, I'd be willing to trade you one of my better razors for it.

Famous Grouse does have it's uses .... ideal in egg nogg or in my old family 'ginger wine recipie ' I'm not so passionate for the grain whisky mixes like those - stick to Malts and you won't go wrong.

    Garry, et al,

You guys seem to now your single malts. but can you name me any*ahem* cheap single malts that dont taste like the devil's urine. i like Glen Livet, its got some body to it. a little thicker than the likes of Glenfiddich. im a big fan of the peaty-er single malts, like Laphroaig or Lagavullin. so what would you all recommend?

    Default Me Likes It!

Craganmore's actually not bad at about $50 for 750ml.

And as far as the Glens go Glenmorangie all the way. The rest can go hang for all I've tried.

I'm not a connoisseur of these single malts but I also like Glen Livet. I still prefer a good beer though.

$50?! im a college student i spend $20 to get 30 cans of beer... and not the good stuff either, im talking Natural Light, Budwieser, Molson. but the single malt would have to be in the $25-$30 range for it to make sense for me. although concievably it would work out, because i wouldnt share it and it would last longer than a given bottle of cheap stuff. still though it will be a while before i can spend $50 on a bottle of scotch.

That might make sense for you, but not for single malts. I first tried Cragganmore when I was a broke art student. Still broke.

You just don't get it do you? It MUST be shared. Scotch is an experience and so is a good friend. They go GREAT together.

Not around me. I can't stomach the cheap stuff. Just sits on the shelf gathering dust. I'd rather go thirsty.

Maybe you should start drinking Gin? Bombay Saphire's a nice drink. Or Stolichnaya for vodka. When I have them I keep those in the freezer so they're always ready. If you're stuck on Whisky, can I recomend a bottle of Crown Royal?
