Default T-shirt size in the US

    Hey guys,
I wanted to order a t-shirt in the US, but I am uncertain about the size I should order, given the differences in US - European shirt size designation.

    I'm 1 meter 76 (5'9") with a waistline of 81 cm (~32 inches).
I suspect that for normal male t-shirts, that would be either a Large or a Medium. Which one would be the best bet (considering I don't want the t-shirt to be too floppy around my body)?

It is hard.. If you do not have a gut, a medium would probably work.

I want to say i wore a medium when I was still a size 32, but i have been buying large for quite a while now.. 5'10"

Large or extra large depending on gut and shoulder width.

+1 What Stefan said, especially if it's cotton. The Under Armour polyester products do not shrink as much. I thought T-Shirts were supposed to be loose?

I have six-pack abs, so gut is not a problem
It's true that t-shirts should not be tight, but with a flat belly, loose t-shirts look way too large imo.

Thanks for the link to the comparison table Ben. I'll ask my wife if the numbers make sense to her because I have no idea. That should give me a good idea on what the appropriate shirt size is.

My 19 year old son is the same size with no gut and wide shoulders and he likes the tee shirts to fit snug to show off all the work he has put in at the gym ( chicks dig it he tells me ) go with a MEDIUM.

It's not just sizing, it's the cut of the shirt. The problem is that many
T shirts are just a billboard for advertising or slogans and have to allow for guys who have no visible waist.

Sizing is a lottery, one companies' size L can be the same as anothers M or or even XL. I've had a few Ts from the US over the years.
At 38" chest, I order size M, which can vary from skin tight to nightdress size, depending on the vendor.

The best fitting Ts I've ever had are plain coloured Ben Sherman, which are cut really well.

Maximum would be large but at 5'9" and a flat stomach unless you are very wide in the shoulders with large biceps I would think a medium would fit. You would swim in an extra large IMO.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I asked a friend of mine who owns a screen printing business in North Carolina.

He said it varies a bit depending on who made the t-shirt blank.

Could you link us to the shirt Bruno? If so, they might indicate who makes the blank, or you could ask them via email and I could find out from my friend how the size works out.
