Thanked: 43Flight Attendant Quits. I Mean He Really Quits
Have you read about the Flight Attendant who apparently got fed up and quit in a very dramatic way?
You can read about it here: Flight attendant charged with opening emergency evacuation chute - CNN.com
It looks like a passenger was trying to get up and retrieve his bag in the overhead before the pilot gave the all clear sign and the plane was still taxiing. From other articles I've read the passenger hit the flight attendant in the head with the bag or shoved him and the flight attendant had finally had enough.
And I mean enough. He announced some curse words to the passenger on the intercom and said some other explicit words for the world to hear and then said, "I'm outta here" and popped the hatch, blew the inflatable slide and out he went.
They arrested him at his home and he had this smile of a man who had done what he wanted when he wanted and felt that sweet release.
I personally think this guy should be let go and some folk songs sung about him. I've dealt with the public and, frankly, I think what he did is freakin' awesome.
I've been there. He has given hope to all who have had to bite their tongues with @$$holes because they have no choice.Last edited by joscobo; 08-10-2010 at 08:33 AM.

Read that earlier, and I love it! If you're going to do something, do it all the way!

I dont blame him. Largely the general public are rude and thoroughly irritating..! People individually can be quite nice but, from experience, the public as a whole arent that great.
What a way to quit though..!

It's kind of interesting that no one reported on what happened to the passenger. The flight attendant clearly snapped for which there is no excuse for that behavior. But, if nothing was done to the passenger, then why have rules and regulations in place that can't, or won't, be enforced. If the regulation isn't enforceable get rid of it.

I was having a conversation with some friends a few days ago about the incredible lack of manners, common courtesy and general lack of civility that have permeated cultures worldwide.
On a plane, while driving, at the grocery store, any governmental service office, in a doctors office, all over the television. People have no ability to consider anyone but themselves.
It is not everywhere, and certainly not everyone, but boy is it a lot.
That is just one of the aspects of SRP that I am attracted to - simple manners. What is so difficult about simple manners????? Oh yes - you have to realize that the world does not revolve around you!

Thanked: 3795I have a perfect example of that..
Three weeks ago I was returning from a job interview and got stranded overnight in Chicago O'Hare due to a severe thunderstorm. (I don't travel often, and hate to fly, but I only have about a 50% success rate with that airport) Surprisingly, the airport set up a lot of cots for the stranded travelers. Within 20 minutes about a third of the cots were occupied but by that point EVERY single pillow and blanket on unoccupied cots were gone. That's right, those who had already claimed cots for themselves helped themselves to 2, 3, even 4 blankets and pillows, ignoring that this meant those who came for cots later, and they did, would be left without pillows or blankets.
I couldn't stay in the area. It infuriated me that people would behave so thoughtlessly to each other. I envisioned myself yelling at the entire crowd telling them exactly what kind of excretory orifices they were.
I remember something my grandmother said a long time ago well before she died. She said that she was glad that she was going to die when she was, because she did not like the way people are becoming. I think I'm finally beginning to agree with her.

Thanked: 227I agree Alembic, I'm only a spriteful 26 but when I was growing up my folks drummed it into me that manners and common civility are important trading commodities, I grew up in a pretty bad area in the city yet I am polite curteous and decent, and this is unfortunately a rarity in my age group.
So far as I see, it doesn't do me any harm to take an extra minute to hold an elevator, or hold a door open or let someone in queue before me at the checkout if they only have two things to pay for and I have tonnes. Also the phrase thank you is massively underused.... I get odd looks for saying thank you to a waitress for clearing empty glasses off my table and I also surprise the girl at the bank because everytime she serves me I say "have a nice day" which I generally say to most people I encounter.
It's a bad state of affairs I guess, when you are nice to folk and they are genuinely shocked by this.

I really like the flight attendant's reaction, class but unfortunately self defeating. I would wish that the passenger get the same sentence as the FA. In fact I would wish that the passenger get some sentience! I are 70 and have really noted the decreasing respect shown by most folks I have to watch. It is now a treat to meet a well mannered person.
As respect dwindles, the remaining time of our republic shortens. I have noticed that: In an armed society, courtesy is a given.
