Thread: hobbies

Coffee is my other hobby /obsession. I have several roasters and just about every product know to man to brew it and along with several different grinders. I have several drip makers, vacuum pots, presses, and of course the best espresso machine that I could afford. I usually have multiply bags of several different types around at any give time and try blending either before or after roasting. I gave up trying to come up with my own espresso blend when I found a great one at http://www.sweetmarias.com the Espresso Monkey blend is better than any thing I could come up with.

My hobbies pretty much dried up when my two kids showed up. But golf, reading movies are left

Lets see Cigars, camping, shooting, gems, flint knapping, scuba diving and origami. There are a number of other things I'm interested in, but I can't call them hobbies.
Forgot to mention Golf. We are having our employee tournament this Saturday.

Combat Action Shooting, usually through USPSA.

My main hobby is martial arts. I study Aikido, Judo and Jodo (Japanese short staff). I'm in the midst of a self-induced torture of writing a technical book on Judo as it was taught in the 1950's before the introduction of weight classes. I just got phpBB fired up for the dojo at our new hosting company, so there's yet another forum to moderate. I also enjoy cooking, camping, hunting and playing guitar. I like reading, though most of what I've read the past year or so has been research material for my book. I shot IPSC competitively many years ago but just don't have the time or money to do so any longer.

I love to play golf. I have played since I was Five years old and spent most of my high school and college years (the first time) on the course. I am surprised to see that only one other person mentioned golf. I thought everybody played golf nowadays. But, sadly , like Rich, now that I have a child I do not get out as often as I used to.

Kyle, let me know when you finish that book so I can get a copy. The way it was originally practiced, Judo was a true martial art -- mind over matter. Too many modernized martial arts are focusing on the technical/competitive side while neglecting to teach the mental/spiritual side of the art. And don't even get me started on the belts... They were meant to keep your pants up!

I love cycling camping and canoeing when I have time. I have a select comic book collection. Thieves & Kings was my favorite title, but it isn't being produced right now. Astro City is another great but intermittent title.

I guess my guitar is a hobby, but it borders on the proffessional as does my writing recently. Acting is a job that borders on the hobby because I get to do so little of it. Maybe this year will be different. I'm about due for another busy one. The voyeuristic social occupational hazards which go with it are actually an obsession, man people fascinate me. I could eavesdrop for hours.

Several years ago I went to the coast to try salt water fishing. Although I discovered the 4 levels of pukeing without having my face turn beet red, I still had a tough time with keeping my balance on some of the bigger waves.

I was determined to make my venture a complete success, so I began to focus on something that would take my mind off of rough seas. I found that there was a specific knack to running a hook through live fish and keep them that way. It made a difference when it came to catching wahhi. They are so shrewd!

Anyway, I really got good at it. So much so that the captain of the le Darcy told me that I could go out on some free trips if I agreed to bait everyone's hooks. This is how I became involved in the best hobby I ever experienced...

I became a master baiter!
