After doing hours of research this week on the topic of my grandfather's service in the Army; it appears I made a big mistake in the above post.

Though my grandfather did guard Rommel's men at Camp Hale, these photos are not from Camp Hale. I am 90% sure they were taken by him at Natal, Brazil. My grandfather was drafted at age 35, he already had five children. He was a surveyor at the time of his draft. He helped to build airstrips for allied planes.

For years I thought the photos were of Camp Hale. While looking over the photos last week , it hit me like a brick to the head; two of the photos had mango trees in them. Not too many mango trees in Colorado.

My friend, it's far better that you discovered the error now than to keep passing the false history along as 'Fact'. I know from personal experience.

When I started the project to ID and then Replace my Second Cousin's medals there was something uncovered that the family had always thought was a 'Fact'.

It was common knowledge that Max had joined the Army when he was only 17 and had lied about his age. FACT: Max was drafted at I believe 20 years old.

With that said there were other things brought out that the family didn't know about. Such as he was a Long Range Recon Patrol Leader. (LRRP)

With all of this said, you should still be very proud of your grandfather's service.
