Straight razors designs make great tattoos... If there is one thing I am into its tattoos. I am not sure how I missed this thread before now. I currently have a a half sleeve, in the process of working out the design for my second 1/2 sleeve and have a design idea ready to roll on a full back piece right now. Everyone has their limits though. I think neck tattoos are cool - but I won't do it. Unless I can cover it up when I go out to eat with the wife or sit in court for the day I would not be comfortable doing it. I amd right on the verge though of going full sleeves. Necks, hands.. out of bounds for me.
Tattoos are very cool. Some elements of society are slightly weirded out bu them but they are actuually becoming quite common place. I have been in law enforcement for 13 years. Back when I was in uniform the only one you could see was on the inside of my left arm (sacred heart w/ my kids initials) occasionally someone would spot it when I was in short sleeves and inquire but nothing too out of the ordinary.
Now I have a 1/2 sleeve that goes right down to the base of my left elbow. Thats damn near impossible to hide unless I am in long sleeve shirt. Those get a few more looks and occasionally my Type A counterparts have taken issue with them saying that they are not appropriate. (...though they have yet to define the term for me. As its mostly some traditional americana and oriental style nothing sexist, racial or anything like that) I think my uniform days are over but I never planned on stepping back in a cruiser again anyways.
The key is to find a good ARTIST first. There are plenty of hackers out there that tattoo flash. You wnat to find someone that is an artist first and a tattoo artist second. The principle of design and color theory are the same. Only the canvas will get pretty pissed and spread the work if they screw it up.
Good artists are out there - you just need to seek them out. I drive a little over and hour to see my guy and its well worth the trip.
Also don't worry about the inks. Today they are very safe and colorfast.
This tattoo talk calls for an avatar change. ...done.Last edited by EnGarde; 06-30-2006 at 01:31 AM.

Cool!!
I knew you had class when you said tribal was out. Then you can probably go on all night about peoples reactions to ink. Pirates and razors... what a combo!!

I like tribal because of the contrast and because I can use abstract elements to create a recognizable image.

i wasnt knocking the razor flash, i just dont prefer tribal work. ive seen some that looks outstanding, but i still wouldnt get it. it wouldnt really fit into my current layout. and yes, EnGarde, ive had reactions from one extreme to the other, lol.

Absoulutely - I was not knocking it either. Its just that tribal has been so overdone inthe tattoo world. Every college kid and junior tuff guy has a tribal tattoo peeking beneath his sleeve. When I look at a good tattoo I look at the linework, shading, originality, new spin on and old idea - whatever. I love any good tattoo work. I find that tribal designs generally bore me very quickly as they don't have an apparent meaning or representation. I don't even thing my tattoo artist will do tribal...
Wanna see some good work... check this out (look at Marcus's and John's portfolios)

Thanked: 2I like Hannahs work. That's some serious Traditional Tattoo skill.
Any well thought out tattoo can be nice. The straight is interesting, though it isn't even really "tribal" in my opinion. It's got the thick black lines and lacks shading, both ideas that are common in "tribal" work, but the open spaces and the obvious, if somewhat abstract, razor makes it more like "black work" than "tribal".
When I think "tribal" I think of row upon row of flash drawings, with random sharp, swirling or pointed lines joined together in loose patterns. For those that don't know, the term "tribal" has nothing to do with any tribe or native persons style of tattoo. It's more like a bastardization of such.

Just thought I'd rekindle this thread to announce that I'm currently half way through a new piece on arm/shoulder/back - a rather attractive biomech dragon in black/grey.
Waiting for first half to heal before it gets finished off in a week's time. This is the first tatt I've had that's required two sittings and I have to say it's a tad odd having an unfinished piece on my skin.
Anybody else sporting a biomech tatt?
