Yes the problem has been averted...for now. However, hold on to your seats. Just wait until they debate the debt ceiling and the next budget. This will all be replayed.

Thanked: 1262When Newt shut things down last time, didnt they pass a special resolution to guarantee pay for military personal? I would guess something similar would happen here if a shutdown does happen.

actually there was a resolution in the house that garenteed military pay, but I dont know if it would have gotten 2/3rds majority to get past the threatened veto or have even gotten to the senate floor if the POTUS hadn't threatened to veto it.
that had to have been the dumbest veto threat I have ever seen...esspecialy considering how little he got out of it.

some people called a local (to me) radio talk show this morning and chided our senator for letting this budget pass. they said they preferred the government to be shutdown than to cut fewer billions than were proposed. We republicans have an enemy finally now that bush is out of office, but now we need a scapegoat for not defeating it

Thanked: 1185I look for the debt ceiling debate to be far worse. The way I understand it, the ceiling needs to be increased if we are to continue to make minimum payments on the country's credit card. So if they don't increase it, bad things happen and if they do increase it, bad things happen. It really does begin to look like whatever we can manage to do will be too little too late.

Let's not forget though that military families only received one weeks pay instead of their full paycheck. Although retroactive pay might make sense to us and Congress, military dependents without food will find the concept more difficult to swallow (pun intended).
