Just my take, there is usually some good in everything at the beginning but that tends to go away when incompetents, thieves, and politicians start breeding generations of more of the same into them.

I would caution that labor organization was the thing that originally led to what we now call communism. It was an intellectual answer to the supposed greed of Nobility/upper class/corporations. It didn't work either.

My personal experience with Unions has not been good. I occasionally had to pay into them to keep my job while I was not allowed to become a member. Then there was the company union that would not go to management for my MD bills after being injured on the job. I remember the women of an electrical union always voting strike when the contract came up. The guys and gals in that union and the Teamsters could not cross the line. Those who were supporting a family were happy with the offer from management but the "vacationers" would not settle. So the loss of pay was greater than the perceived minor increase could make up in the next two years. And, the Union big-wigs made really nice extra income for per diem, meals , and travel expenses.

The jobs that went to China are now coming back to the US. The quality and timeliness of the shipments from China is not a pretty thing. The CNC machinist/shop I use for multiples is working overtime 6 days a week and has rehired help he had to lay off during the "manufacture in China craze." He was almost closing his business in January. Now I face 4-6 week lead time unless he slips a job in for me on a weekend. Small orders do not really make money for a shop. The difficulty with China is that they like us are outsourcing to other Asian nations to get cheaper labor and manufacture upon which they make money on when billing foreign companies.

You know.. the same thing happened to my dad... He worked loyaly for a company and was the best machinist they had, but because they didn't want to pay what he deserved (he was up for his annual raise that year) they let him go.. he was on the cusp of retirement too..
