I was on the phone with a guy just a few minutes ago to schedule a pickup of an item. I asked him for his address and the first thing he said was "Ok, do you have a pen?" Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's just because I have a three room apartment so I'm never more than 15 feet from a computer, but I don't write things down. I make random Text documents or type in the url box of a new Chrome tab or something like that.

So he gives me the address and I type it into google maps and get directions. In the mean time, he's saying "So are you familiar with the blah blah area? Do you know where blah blah is?" I just lie and say yes, because while I'm not familiar with the area, I have already mapped the directions to his house. Then he gives me a turn by turn. I just say "yeah" or "ok" after each direction, because I feel it would be rude to interrupt with a polite version of "I googled it, so this is a waste of time."

But, thinking back to the days when I used to talk on a corded land line and when my computer also needed that line to connect to the internet, I guess the whole giving directions thing must be out of habit from the pre-net days. And as soon as I thought about that, I was reminded of some very pleasant childhood memories, and I didn't mind the time wasted during the direction giving. Not that having my time wasted bothers me all that much; look how much I spent just writing this post...
