Technology vs. Habits
I was on the phone with a guy just a few minutes ago to schedule a pickup of an item. I asked him for his address and the first thing he said was "Ok, do you have a pen?" Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's just because I have a three room apartment so I'm never more than 15 feet from a computer, but I don't write things down. I make random Text documents or type in the url box of a new Chrome tab or something like that.
So he gives me the address and I type it into google maps and get directions. In the mean time, he's saying "So are you familiar with the blah blah area? Do you know where blah blah is?" I just lie and say yes, because while I'm not familiar with the area, I have already mapped the directions to his house. Then he gives me a turn by turn. I just say "yeah" or "ok" after each direction, because I feel it would be rude to interrupt with a polite version of "I googled it, so this is a waste of time."
But, thinking back to the days when I used to talk on a corded land line and when my computer also needed that line to connect to the internet, I guess the whole giving directions thing must be out of habit from the pre-net days. And as soon as I thought about that, I was reminded of some very pleasant childhood memories, and I didn't mind the time wasted during the direction giving. Not that having my time wasted bothers me all that much; look how much I spent just writing this post...

if you lived in Tulsa, you'd take the directions. Google can't keep up with the orange barrels

Remember, the more complicated the plumbing the easier it is to gum up the works. The technology crash is coming.

There I was in the '60s, hip, slick and cool, ahead of the times, only to become an anachronism in the '90s. I still have a land line, never had a cell phone in my life. Use a Rolodex for phone numbers I don't memorize. Pens strategically placed at various points around the house..... to take notes.....
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Actually...the more complicated the plumbing...the more failsafes will be built in. By now we have backup systems of our backups systems' backups! Something pretty serious would have to happen for that to have a big crash. Something like an EMP pulse that covers the world....and even after that in many cases the hardware will only need a good reboot for it to work again.

Pen and paper for me. I even carry a notebook and pencil everywhere I go. And, yes, I own a smart 'phone. I'm just to ignorant (and blissully so) to know how to make the most of it.
