There's more here: hat etiquette « advancedetiquette

Jews, muslims and Sikhs have different etiquette when it comes to hats.

I wear a hat daily and this is pretty much how I roll. I seldom doff my hat at work (i.e. large public area a.k.a cubicle farm). On elevators if there are ladies present I will generally remove my hat. Inside private houses and when eating food, I will also remove my hat. Other than that, I'm covered. Probably not text book but how I do it anyway.

    +1 to this.

A fedora doesn't suit me, but I frequently wear drivers' caps. I don them and keep them on in public areas; the zoo, stores (Walmart, Zoo Gift Shop, etc), lobbies, etc. I doff them for prayers, national anthems, dinner, entering someone's home (or hospital room, etc.), or when having a conversation indoors with a lady. It would probably be seen as polite to remove your hat when speaking to a lady at any time, but I leave my hat on in most instances when I would otherwise have it on. If I'm outdoors speaking to my wife, mother, grandmother, etc. I don't take it off.

I don't wear hats when performing weddings or funerals, just in case you find yourself in that situation.

Not forgetting baseball cap etiquette, where the position of the peak denotes the wearer's IQ, the further round to the rear, the lower it is.

The word in Australia is that only two kinds of people wear baseball caps, stupid Americans who are the product of a failed educational system and baseball players. I don't really believe it myself, as a lot of stupid Australians, who are the product of a failed educational system also wear baseball caps. I think you may be right in saying the postion of the brim/peak has a lot to do with the level of intellect.

Good for you jhenry! GOOD MANNERS NEVER GO OUT OF FASHION!! Someone Should Always remove their hat upon entering someone's home!! If they are comfortable with you keeping it on, they will let you know! I would consider Classrooms in this category!! Sport things are different! With that said, I would NEVER wear a hat at the supper table at someone's home!! Outdoor Picnics would be a different matter!
