As a general rule, I don't exploit bugs. I enjoyed how challenging STALKER was at the beginning. I took my time through the midgame, gathering up insane gear and getting really good with it, and then stormed through to the end. It was, in my opinion, the best and most engaging FPS I have ever played.

I should have said worked around, I'm not a cheat user or anything like that, spoils the game, I knew a lot of people got so frustrated with this game they gave up on it early..
For example when entering an area, the game would forget to load up the NPC's, before i figured that out, i'd be ten minutes wandering about then all of a sudden the game would hang up, go again and i'd be surrounded on all sides by bandits. A fast quick save and reload sorted it out.
Other than that, nothing ca,me close to this game for me until the mass effects and fallout 3

Oh, you meant bad bugs. I never really ran into any. There were a few minor trigger type issues, but nothing like what you're describing. And a few graphics issues as well. And sometimes the poor translations caused problems.
I still amazes me how much I liked it, given all the technical issues...

i think the 1.3 or whatever patch sorted that out, the trigger could be laggy at times.
It just kind of sucked me in. I was hooked when i was creeping about in the dark and saw a bandit with his light on (had night vision) then i saw another stalker crep out from behind a bush and blast him in the back of the head. The AI was incredible, game had tremendous personality. played it start to finish 3 times and the game was completely different each time.
I even thought the bad translation was endearing lol

Not two characters I'm like, but my two favorite characters from video games would have to be...
Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect trilogy because you can really make his story your own (and believe me, I've clocked over 150 hours and 1 and 2 alone) and John Marston from Red Dead Redemption because he's so REAL. He's happy one minute and angry the next and he is the single-most human character I've ever seen from any video game I've ever played, and I've played quite quite quite a few.
Oh, runners up include Isaac Clarke from Dead Space 1 and 2 and Duke Nukem from all fifty thousand of his games released.

Played STALKER a lot (still do) the original and all others after it. I got them on all on a weekend deal from Steam and didn't notice any bugs to speak of. Of course, by that time and with the automatic upgrades through Steam any bad buggies were probably already fixed.
As far as immersive gameplay Hidden and Dangerous II gets my vote for that. I can remember spending countless hours working through the stealth missions just to get the team out without ever raising an alarm or getting wounded. Yea... I'm wierd like that...
Currently working on Splinter Cell - Conviction trying to not ever be detected (on the levels where it's actually possible)... proving to be a real challenge...

clear sky crashed on me constantly.. then on day it crashed and wouldn't load up the save games citing they were created under a different patch version of the game.. they weren't. i lost 20 maybe more hours and a LOT of good kit great armour, upgraded rifles of all designations and types... was not happy, haven't reinstalled it again
