I did go to school for a while in the south side of Chicago, so I have a little bit of experience. The Black Hollis will conceal a straight with black scales fairly well between the laces and the tongue. The green of the Vans will make it more difficult to find something with matching scales, and the contrasting laces will also be a detriment to concealment.

Go with the Hollis.

The hood is getting tougher by the day but I've been out and about a lot without anyone messing with me. In any case I wouldn't want to use a straight as a weapon. You know how much time and effort it takes to sharpen properly. Short weapons are better in the stabbing variety. However I never needed one so far. I'm a young strong male, obviously aware of the surroundings at any moment, so the bums have easier marks on the streets. I'm also a bit too old for punk teenagers who just wanna show off in front of their buddies.

Yeah! To me the Converse look is much more stylish AND more versatile. You can wear them with shorts, jeans, or a jacket and suit pants (depending on how much fashion-relaxed you are). Also, as you pointed out, they are much more easier to match with various colors. They seem a bit "plain" but this might be your style philisophy - sometimes less is more, and the detail does a good job of saving them from being too boring. By the way, stains and dust do show up on black.

Now, I am not advocating them with a suit, but the men's style mags were pushing this look some time ago, and it might still work for you. I personally don't do this that much, I prefer to wear nice leather flip flops with a siut (last 1-2 buttons on shirt open, no tie). However, I wear my Adidas Samba (retro style) indoor soccer shoes both when coaching kids and to classical music concerts (with a navy suit and black cashmere T-shirt) and they have gotten me some looks from the 60+ stuck up crowd but I don't really care.

Ivo, that's actually an interesting idea. Unfortunately I only wear suits to match job requirements. As I prefer not to take the world too seriously, I am naturally drawn to a more casual style. One good thing about my last job was that I could dress very casually and handle shocked questions like:

Ahhh the perks of working for the government Actually the relaxed dress code helped me handle the fieldwork aspect of my job as it made the slum dwellers less hostile and in the posh $1,000,000 condo complexes there was the shock value of a dude dressed as a punk skateboarder with the "You're a small-time punk and I'm trying to bring you back to the straight path" attitude However, it worked quite well in both instances.
