What about semi colons, colons and colon cleansing?

I work with someone who used to work in college admissions, and they once had an applicant named ' Jones. Yes, his mother named him apostrophe, and no, you were not allowed to spell it out.

Thanked: 983I probably would have spelt it W.A.N.K.E.R anyway, even though it wasn't his fault, with a name like that it would be hard not to turn out to be one. Some parents should get a firm kick in the pants for the names they give their kids. I went to school with a couple of brothers with the surname 'Nuss'. First names were Peter and Andrew.

James, you just don't get it, do you? The grocer is making a very philosophical statement, abbreviated for efficiency.
The banana IS.
He is letting you know that the very existence of the banana is confirmed not in general, but at that particular coordinate in the spacetime continuum.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 43Being a bit of a stickler for grammar (though FAR from perfect), this post has provided some quality entertainment. In order to brush up on my skills - Ill have to makes sure's I reads some quality literature's like Melville or T. S. Elliot or something like they're type of work.
P.S. I give a pass to English as a second language members, as my attempts at any second language can be quite pedestrian at times.

Ironically, the post you quoted is actually written by a speaker of English as a second language.
Granted, the Belgian approach to language is deeply humbling to pretty much any other nation on Earth's (Parse THAT one, huh?), but still...the fact is, the general level of English used by native speakers in the USA is far behind the general level of English spoken by most European non-native speakers.
I've tried, and failed, to participate in other language fora...my deepest respect to anyone who can maintain it at this level.
Course, bein as how I growed up'm rural Kansas, I reckon English is purt' near my second language anways.
