i actually slept thru it, my wife didnt notice it, she thought a few tractor-trailers went by the house. i have slept thru harder quakes than that one, and was on adak back in the 80's during a 7.7, that one had a pucker effect(if anyone is unclear about what that is, im me and i will tell you). quakes are just gods way of saying that we are mortal, and not to forget that.

I live 40 miles from the epicenter. It was a pretty good jolt. In the office next to mine, a lady was undergoing a "sleep study" to help her with sleep apnea. Needless to say, she woke up and had trouble going back to sleep.

In all seriousness, I'm glad to hear that all members and their associated families are safe and secure. I hope Butch ends up being able to replace his HVAC unit, too, 'cause those things are a clustermess on the wallet.

I wonder what Californians make of our reaction to all this?
Living in Calif and knowing a bit about Quakes I did call friends and family.
Geology in Calif is full of structures that can reflect and disperse quake
energy. The east coast and the central US (New Madrid Seismic Zone)
are different and quakes rattle and roll over larger areas.

The broken masonry and toppled goods in grocery stores are
    typical for the magnitude...

One big risk is cracked masonry on chimneys. As cooler
weather moves in make sure yours are inspected.

The USGS has a big office in Northern Va. This quake will have
many eyes looking at it... Watch for recommendations for revisions
to building codes if there are any surprises.
