Maybe it's just the nomenclature. My company used to have vacation days and sick days. If you wanted a sick day you typically called in using a weak, slightly hoarse and very nasal voice that made you sound like you were at death's door to convince the boss that you shouldn't be at work contaminating the rest of the employees. Then we merged with another company and sick days and vacation days were eliminated and, instead, we were given a set number of "personal days" to be used as we saw fit. A day off is to be had by calling in with your normal voice and saying you're taking a personal day. Now there is no guilt for faking a sick day.
