Thanked: 79Land of the free...
Here's my oversimplified view of U.S. Politics.
The two major parties are a shell game mostly and the real power lies with the media/education complex. Media pounces on an idea that gets them ratings and suddenly it becomes dogma, accepted without question. People are sold into the hysteria of the day and clamor for whatever politicians promise "results". Cue the attorneys.
Suddenly every child is the prime target for no doubt hundreds of predators and are required to stay inside for "safety". They get fat..heaven forbid we let them outside away from the TV...someone might steal them! So we sue sue sue the restaurants they eat in, food producers, the list goes on...
and if I'm not happy it is obviously the other party's fault and other people should have their taxes raised. They never see the shell game.
Someone should do something!

Thanked: 69it makes sense.....
skinny clean kids would be harder to catch but easier to transport....
fat greasy kids would be easier to catch but considerably harder to transport....
now... skinny greasy kids would theoretically be the best to have... quick and hard to hold on to....
discuss amongst yourselves...

Thanked: 1185We're heading towards another one of my pet peeves. Our kids have become such wussies that we need NFL football players and the first lady to encourage them to play outside for an hour a day. When I was a kid anyone who spent that much time inside the house was considered some kind of a freak. His hour a day would have probably been spent getting his ass kicked by the normal kids who spent most of the their lives outside (playing contact sports, swinging sticks at each other, dirt clod wars, riding bikes without helmets, etc.) Ah those were the days. Come to think of it, staying inside used to be a form of punishment. Who from my generation hasn't sat in their bedroom after some particularly stupid stunt, watching their buds playing outside and thinking, "Gee, why can't she just whip my ass and get it over with, I'd really like to be outside right now."

Thanked: 983But I wouldn't call that game you label as gridiron/football a contact sport. It's football for wussies with all that padding on. Play a mans sport! Play Rugby!
I actually don't give a hoot about football myself. I just like to make the jokes about it

The problem is, my city isn't the same anymore. I could be out most of the day running around the neighbourhood, but you can't do that with your kids anymore. At least in Toronto I'd be hesitant about letting my daughter run around all day.
