Smells of the season
I can associate different smells with different events times of the year etc. For us in the northern hemisphere it is fall and the weather is getting colder. Tonight the house was 55'f and I had a little chill, time to check out the furnace. I have lived in this house for 21 years and each time the furnace is fired after sitting idle for the summer there is the smell of burning the dust and getting rid of the humidity in the ductwork. It is not overly pleasant. One year I did think about doing it when it was warmer and the windows were open. :-] In its own way it is comforting though. Another year has passed, things are going well, and although colder weather is on its way we will be warm inside our nest.

Thanked: 993I like the smell of the crisp and dry fall air. Once the humidity breaks in Toronto, and the temp. drops....it's lovely. I wait for that "clean" smell all year. It's the time of year when you pop on your peacoat and hat, and wander outside for a little walk and a stogie or pipe.
Another great smell of fall/atumn, is that first stew. You come home, walk into the house, and someone has a nice beef stew on the stove, teeming with bay leaf and hearty herbs. That's a good smell!

I know exactly what you mean, we're on the Autumnal turn here in Blighty and nearly overnight it smells and feels different. Coal fires have a distinct smell and we had ours going last night. I camp year round and this means packing away my summer bag and upgrading to the 3 season and wool clothing right now. Short days means plenty of cooking and drinking round the fire in darkness. To be honest I'm looking forward to the snow and down winter bag coming out but that's still a month or two away. Each season definately has it's own smell and vibe and food to go with it!

I can only hope for the best in the coming season. There's so much that can be good the the northern hemisphere, may all people see that and work to insure that it happens.

Thanked: 90I got my wood stove going now. The smell of wood smoke and the nice dry heat from the fire is something I was really missing the last couple of years. Here in the Pacific NW it is generally wet as all hell in the winter months. Having a wood fire helps keep the house dry and warm like no other heat source. The temperature rarely drops below freezing (and when it does, only for a few days at a stretch) so it doesn't take a lot of firewood to warm the house. I rarely burn more than two cords in a winter, and at $130 a cord, it's pretty economical compared to electric or propane.

I can hear Autumn as well as smell it. The dry fallen leaves make their noise as the pavement as the wind blows them around. At night, sometimes I hear the geese honking as they make their journey. I love this time of year.

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Something about it reminds me of my childhood.....

There's something about that smell...that brisk, clean smell. It smells like victory.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Thanked: 993I walked out this morning, and the dew was still on the leaves. It was a spectacular smell. Rich, earthy, and a cool temperature. The kind of moment where you just stop walking and take a long breath.
