I don't hate them for the money they make. What I don't understand is the reason that they are worth that much is because people idolize them buy their jerseys, the products they endorse etc. If they truly had the 1600 best players in the world they should be so evenly matched that the winner would be decided which way the ball bounced.
I read a while ago I can't remember where at the moment. I think it was Malcom Gladwell that the biggest thing in becoming a hockey player [for example] was the month that you were born. Teams are started at 4-5 years old. If you were born in January at 5 years old you are 20% older than someone born in December. A big advantage. You get picked as a better player at a young age and get more attention and on the better teams. You are not any better or more talented you just happened to be born in the right month.

It doesn't help that many of the idols develop a huge ego, behave like primadonnas, and the kids start to think that that is acceptable behavior; that it is perfectly normal to cheat on your partner with any opportunity that arises; that it is not a big deal if you are found snorting cocaine, taking steroids or driving while drunk; that it is ok to behave like a jerk without manners.

I don't care in the slightest for watching pro sports. That said, I might watch half the SuperBowl (mostly for the commercials and the half-time show). And once in a blue moon, I'll go and watch a local baseball game; wouldn't wast my money going to a pro game. Just that attitude will get you weird looks and comments around here (upstate South Carolina), where Friday night high school football is practically a religion, and if you're not a die-hard supporter of Carolina or Clemson, you don't even register.
I've got nothing against supporting your team, with the idea of opposing teams engaged in a sort of faux combat against their opponents. After all, I played soccer myself as a teenager with a bunch of Argentinians, and I'll NEVER forget our epic battles against the boys on the mostly Brit team!
I guess what I hate (pity is probably closer to it) are these back-slapping, uber-macho a-holes (usually football fans) who question your manhood if you're not into football. My usual reply is that I don't need to watch other men bash each other senseless in order to feel like a man myself-now THAT pisses 'em off! There are many roads to sharp.
