Florence was just too big with too many smelly people (much like any large city). It was also thick with pickpockets. I carry my wallet in my front pocket whenever I'm in a city and after two days in Florence I lost count of how many "brushes" I got up against my back pockets... and those were from the lousy pickpockets. The good ones I'm sure I never even noticed.

Italy was beautiful. It was romantic. It was also very expensive. I'm glad I did it, but I'm glad I'm home. I'll probably be going back in a few years I'd imagine, but for now I need to rest and get my internal clock reset!

My Italian boss told me Italy was a country of thieves.. I couldn't believe he said that..

Any country is full of thieves if you're an obvious tourist. However if you make an attempt to blend in, not only will you become safer from that but you'll also enjoy the immersion into the local culture.

Ya that is quite true. I never had a problem with pick pockets but I am about 75% Italian so I kinda fit in.

Though they are thieves, at least the pick pockets
    are gentle thieves.

I agree with Gary, I wouldn't enjoy the large cities
at all. In this country or abroad. Give me a small
town or the rural areas any day.

I've heard that the worst theives in Rome are the
packs of Gypsie kid who roam the streets. Any
    truth to this?

It is true.. They're sold into bondage from all over eastern Europe or just kidnapped and either taught to pick pockets, break into houses or purposely maimed to generate income by begging.

This is truely awlful. I would not want to harm
one of these kids. I would not want to get robbed
    by them either.

The bastards responsible for this should be
    put under the jail.

That's why they pay hefty bribes to the cops and run fairly sophisticated operations.
